Status Update: Spec House Construction

Want to know how the spec house is progressing?  Here are some photos to document the construction.

The form-work for the spec house foundations.

The culvert embedded in the soil, with the concrete forms, tree, and golf course in the background.
There may not be great activity, or extensive progress to report, but no less than seven different trades or professions have been involved with this small home since the drawings were completed.

I am not managing the project, but I have found opportunities to check up on the first home built from my drafting efforts.  I am keeping a tally thus far of the different steps of residential construction:

  • Surveying
  • Soil analysis
  • Neighborhood approval
  • Dirt work
  • Temporary electrical pole
  • Concrete formwork
  • Plumbing rough in

Each step might sound easy and straightforward, but some are not.  The messy coordination of different personalities is part of the process, and everyone contributes in their own way.  I am excited to see it completed this far, and will keep the updates posted.

Next, the re-bar needs tying, and the concrete needs pouring.  The floor slab should be finished soon enough though, and framing can begin.  While I only assisted in constructing the culvert on this occasion, there have been plenty of opportunities to get hands on with other projects.  Stay tuned for future updates.
